ahh italia

Just made it into italy yesterday and so far its been very confusing haha. Um on the train i had an old lady trying to talk to me in only italian and it seemed thats the only language people here understand so…… good thing i have my trusty girlfriend to translate and such. Finally got to see sheena again and last night was really cool we just walked around bologna and then ate some italian food which was delish and i was so full yesterday, I’d honestly forgotten what being full felt like. Its a good feeling. Will update later. Oh and its def nice to have internet again, although to be honest it was kind of nice not having it last week as well.

Ice climbing in the alps

It’s been an amazing couple of days and luckily enough this morning I just found an internet card with about 45 minutes on it so I can finally update. My first day in Interlaken I couldn’t believe my eyes. All around me are the Swiss alps. Its weird because your sitting on a train and there’s a bunch of locals and you can’t help but have the biggest grin on your face and take a few pics because its beautiful out the window. Of course it feels a bit embarrassing, but then you think shit I’m never gonna see this again I don’t care if I look touristy. Made it Balmers and it was definitely not what I was expecting. The place is seriously party central. It’s about 4 houses and in the middle is a biergarten. Around 6 they start grilling out and selling hamburgers and beer, and then at 9 or 10 they move the party down to the club they have underground. Yeah a club in a hostel its pretty ridic.

Met a couple people my first day here and the next day we hiked up one of the mountains. It seemed simple enough but looks are deceiving. I must have said we have to be near the ridge about 6 times. Well we finally made it to the ridge after about 3 hours and the view was amazing. Its hard once you get to the top though because everything just drops. They have two benches and then maybe 3 feet and then its nothing but air. It was a great trek and it was lots of fun.

The next day I got to finally do my ice climbing. Yes Ice climbing on a glacier in the alps. That’s just crazy to say, it’s even still hard to believe that I ice climbed in the alps. It wasn’t anything I was expecting it was actually 10 x more. Its just crazy beautiful up there, I mean you’re seriously on top of a glacier. The guy drives you up for about an hour then you stop, get geared up and then walk up the mountain for another hour or more. It’s hard to keep track of time when you’re up there. It’s so hard to describe the experience because nothing will ever do it justice. Once we got to the spot we sat had lunch and then it was time to start dropping into the crevasse of the glacier. The first climb the guy drops you down about 15 feet and then you take your two axes and ice climbing boots and make your way up. That was hard enough for me. I mean I know I’m supposed to be the master ice climber but we can’t always be on the top of our game. Got to do 3 drops in total and the last one he actually drops you down to the bottom of the crevasse and your just chilling inside the glacier. That was hard as hell to get up. I was trying to use both sides of the glacier to get leverage and everything. And of course the guys sitting there having a good laugh and joking with you which only makes you try harder and eventually you make it. Its crazy though because your seriously between two hug pieces of ice barely able to fit through which makes it near impossible to actually spike your ice hammers or whatever they are into the ice because you don’t have enough room to swing it. Not to mention you have glacier water streaming down your back and your arms and legs are so tired. But I would do it again in a second. It was worth every single penny. Its something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life. Plus I met a lot of cool people and afterwards we all went out for drinks.

Today on the other hand was a massive day of rest. After the last two days every muscle in my body just aches. It’s a good kind of aching though. I’ve accomplished a lot and it almost feels like a reward. I’m loving it out here. I’ve got another 2 days and I think tomorrow I’m gonna try and hike another mountain the route says it takes about 3.5 hours to get to the top so I’m going to try and manage it.

Lots to discuss

I know I said I’d write about mount juic today but I’m a little tired and grumpy so lets just say its a big fucking mountain with a castle on top. And yes, because I didn’t wanna pay the 18 euro to get up and down I walked.  Thought the pictures would be bigger but you can always give them a good old click to do that.

The next day I decided I would go outside and read The Da Vinci Code while I waited for my train. To my surprise there was to be no reading done that afternoon as I heard bells, whistles, shouting and microphones across from the park I was beginning to read in. Apparently there was a protest march going on down one of the main streets of the city. The people in the march, to my knowledge wanted some country to be liberated. I couldn’t read the signs but I did notice quite a few children in the crowd. Its always makes your message louder when you have children chanting in the middle of it. To be honest everyone loves kids and if you see a bunch of kids in a march their obviously gonna bring some attention. So I spent the better part of two hours following them and seeing what was up. It was a nice unexpected surprise to round out my barcelona experience.

That night at 8 I rode the train to geneve. Unfortunately when booking the ticket I didn’t know the train went to Zurich so instead I booked it only to Geneva but to be honest it wasn’t that big of a deal. I stayed up and finished reading the Da Vinci Code, and to be honest alot better than Angels and Demons. I still feel as if Dan Brown is somewhat of a flat writer. His character don’t really develop, I don’t really feel they have a lot of depth and his descriptions are lacking. I’d already seen the movie and it really didn’t ruin the book for me, in fact I had forgotten how many of the puzzles were solved so it was fun in an adventure sense and thats really what the guy writes. I’ll give him a hand for being able to write a compelling adventure. Like I said I enjoyed it above his other books and am happy that I read it. But I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t criticize it just a little. Back on subject. This time on the train I didn’t really feel comfortable sleeping, the girl next to me was throwing on cakes of makeup for the first 2 hours she was on the train and spraying perfume all over the place. To be honest neither was really helping cus to me she still looked like a man.

Also last time I was on the train there were a lot of families this time it was just a lot of younger loud people that kept walking back and forth in and out of the coach. I don’t know I just didn’t have the same sense of security this time so I had a bit of a hard time sleeping, and I really only got a couple hours of sleep. At 6 it was time for me to get off the train, oh and let me say this was quite possibly the slowest train I have taken so far. I’d say it was sitting on the tracks more than it was moving. Literally. There were many a time I would look out the window and we would be sitting still just outside some station. Anyways so I got off the train at Geneva and was still surprised that I had not been asked for my passport on the train, the same as when I went into Spain. When I went to board another train I found out why. You have to exit the station to get to the other ramps when I went to do it I had to go through border control. It was quite simple though. Handed the guard my passport, she said thanks. Then entered another room with soldiers who were going through all the steps with the man-woman who couldn’t stop spraying cologne and another guy. They were being patted down stuff going through scanners. This made me scared I thought I’d have to do all this, but when the soldier, who must have seen I had no idea what to do, looked at me he just asked for my passport and said thanks and continued to search the other two. So border control for me was a breeze.

Next I hopped on a train to basel and must admit I passed out for at least 45 min. It was nice though. I’m finally started to feel as though my rail pass was worth it. On the train to Geneva I saved 250 euro and all the trains I’m taking inside of Switzerland are free. Usually they’re about 30 bucks each way. Anyways I relaxed a bit and made my way to basel.

When I arrived in Basel the first thing I did was to book my ticket from Interlaken to Bologna and I decided I would get to Bologna a day early. I didn’t think it neccessary to spend 7 days in Interlaken I’m sure 6 will be quite enough. Next I went to my hostel and I must say it is actually really nice. Aside from the beds being pushed up right next to eachother I’m quite happy with it. After stopping at the hostel it was time to explore. I saw the bridge, the cathedral, the river, the old city walls and towers, the shopping area and the market. I think I accomplished quite a bit for a day of wandering. After a days wandering I’d have to say basel sure does like their odd statues with dragon like beasts and everything has to have a floral stylized gate. Its actually a really cool and I really liked it. The street musicians inside the market building were the best though. I sat and listened to them for a little bit and it just made the experience complete.

One thing that did shock me though were the price tags I saw on everything. I don’t know how it happened but switzerland has to be the most expensive place I’ve been. Sure the pound beats the dollar 2 to 1 but here the swiss franc is about equal to the dollar, yet a mcdonalds meal costs around 13 chf. Yes prices are ridiculous. I really don’t know how people survive here they must just be making boats of money. Its for real scary. A  bag of off brand chips 4 dollars. It’s crazy, its just absolutely crazy. I’m still shocked at it.

In conclusion Switzerland is cool and pretty but it comes with a price. I would write more but I feel my energy waning. I’ve only got probably 4 hours sleep and I could have honestly passed out and not written anything at all, but I know I have loyal fans that I must think about as well. So to all of you, I hope you have enjoyed the telling of this tale and the pictures that go with it. Goodnight

to basel

Off to basel on and overnight train around 8. Guess I’ll spend the rest of the day wandering and reading or chilling on the beach while I wait. I had a bit of a walk up to mount juic castle yesterday, but I’ll update on that when I’m not busy packing up or training or whatev, when I can.

guys who weight 5 times as much as you sleeping on the top bunk of a rickety bed that snore. Yesterday arrived back in barcelona and I was pretty much spent. After doing madrid in a day, toledo in a day and having to come back to barcelona was just alot. Made it to a hostel and met this german guy tim. We went and got food then came back to the hostel where we talked about books for a good hour. Then we decided to head to the beach and have a few beers. It was pretty relaxing and theres nothing like having a few cold ones on the coast of the mediterranean. Then it was time to pass out. Pretty chill day.

Today went to a different hostel and i’m here tonight and tomorrow then sunday I take a train to basel.

Oh and heres a photo for the fam

ps. i’m totally scared right now to be on the bottom bunk.

Sister Cities

First off lets just start by talking bout last night. I ended up getting talked into going out. I mean I’m only in Madrid for 2 days why not go out one night. The hostel took us out to a club. Yeah to be honest its not really fun being in a club and not single. You can’t really meet people, pub crawls are much better for that kind of thing very relaxed chilled etc. Anyways ended up just hangin out with 2 of the older guys from brasil who came with us to the club. All in all it was ok. Best part was the three of us trying to make our way back to the hostel. Being lost in Madrid = not fun. I was surprised by the amount of gross hookers I saw as well, for real. It was nasty. Made it back to the hostel where I turned on the light and ended up waking up the two girls, felt bad but they told me they weren’t even asleep yet this morning when I apologized. I think they were tho. Going out was a bust but hey at least I can say I went out in Madrid.

Now on to sister cities. Made my way to Toledo today. In case you didn’t know Toledo and Toledo, Ohio were the first ever sister cities, so I had to represent. It’s about 30 minutes south of Madrid and used to be the capital. I’d have to say it must have been one hell of a fortress city. Its literally like climbing a latter to get to the middle of the city. Buildings are just on top of eachother and you are always walking up hill. On top of that its hot as hell. I don’t think I’ve sweat so much just from walking in my life. I can understand why people need their siesta. I had to take it really slow, get a decent amount of water in me and take breaks. It’s the only way to do it.

The city is actually small in comparison to Barcelona and Madrid. Its also really easy to get lost bc there was no planning in the city, and every street is an alley. It’s kinda cool. Around the entire city is a wall and bridges to cross the river. The cathedral is really nice, and to be honest its probably in the best shape of any of the cathedrals I’ve seen so far. Also theres a street named for Toledo Ohio, its not too big but then again neither is Toledo so I can’t really ask for much. Toledoan’s also love their swords, I can’t imagine the necessity for that many sword shops, I don’t think that many people seriously use them anymore, I think we kinda moved past that after the crusades.

Tomorrow I’m back to Barcelona I think I’m gonna try and take some day trips this time since I’ve already kinda done the whole Barcelona thing. Oh also I’m losing my voice bad. Right now I sound like a monster and I fear tomorrow I won’t sound like anything cus there won’t be any sounds to come out. Hopefully it turns around in the next couple days before I get to basel.
